The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Freelancing

If you’ve been thinking of making the transition from the traditional work world into the world of freelancing in 2019, there are many things to think about before making the big leap. Are you sure that freelancing is the path you want to take? Take a look at the good, bad and the ugly of freelancing to see if it is right for you.

The Good:

  • Freedom to work when, where, and how much you want to: you can set your own hours and work during the time of day that most suits you
  • No boss
  • Selectivity - you can choose which clients/freelancers you want to work with
  • Unlimited earning potential
  • No commute
  • No commuting costs
  • Ability to pursue passion projects
  • No office politics, annual performance reviews, etc.
  • You can wear anything that’s comfortable for you while you’re working from home
  • Opportunity to learn about sales and marketing, contracts, invoicing, technology, tax deductibles, business expenses, tax payments and other general business skills
  • You can gain experience working on a variety of projects and clients
  • Total creative control

The Bad:

  • Isolating, no coworkers to bounce ideas off of or give you feedback and guidance
  • Having to constantly hustle your brand for new gigs for the first while
  • Inconsistent workflow and income: no steady paycheck
  • Have to manage working with multiple clients on multiple projects simultaneously
  • No paid vacation or parental leave
  • No company-sponsored benefits
  • Managing all business aspects such as sales and marketing, contracts, invoicing, taxes etc. can be daunting and time-consuming
  • Have to generate new work, sales, marketing schemes and troubleshoot problems on your own

The Ugly:

  • Bad clients might try to weasel out of paying you; always having a contract can help you avoid trouble
  • Some people think paying freelancers in "exposure" is good enough; while you might choose to work for free under special circumstances, you won't want to make a habit of it
  • You might not be able to claim unemployment if your business takes a serious downturn so protect yourself by finding out How to Succeed as a Solopreneur
